Statement by President Obama on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day
In 1970, a Senator from Wisconsin named Gaylord Nelson raised his voice and called on every American to take action on behalf of the environment. In the four decades since, millions of Americans have heeded that call and joined together to protect the planet we share.
Since that first Earth Day 40 years ago, we have made immense progress – from the landmark legislation of the 1970s, the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, to the conservation of America’s precious landscapes.
It is common to see reusable shopping bags for sale at every grocery store. Most retailers have taken it as an opportunity to advertise with their logos while others, like Trader Joes of Whole Foods, have added creative art work or messages of eco-consciousness. Did you know that those reusable bags are old water bottles? That’s what the sign says hanging above the check-out line.
Carbon footprint. It’s a word that’s been floating around, and with increased attention being given to living “green” most of us know what it means. More and more Americans are doing their best to reduce the effect their daily lifestyle has on the environment, but how are big businesses playing their part?
Considering their big factories, excessive traveling and massive office buildings, it seems like the carbon footprint of the corporate world is something we should be concerned about, but maybe not for long.
Who doesn’t like to save themselves the stress of the kitchen, and treat themselves to a night out at a nice restaurant? We don’t have to worry about what’s in the fridge, how long to leave the oven on, or even washing dishes afterwards. But before you jet off to your favorite restaurant, there is something that you should worry about. Are you dining green?
Nationwide, Americans face a barrage of worrisome news reports with warnings of impending environmental disasters. And although at times these warnings may seem more nagging then remindful, the country is catching on. Supporting eco-friendly or “green” products is more than a trend; it’s become a movement. Once just an expected effort put forth by the wealthy and the famed, people everywhere now choose green products, conserve energy and purchase sustainable materials.
